Trekker’s Friend has been my reliable walking companion since 2007. I have put a lot of time into developing and testing it. It has done a great job at carrying my pack for many kilometres! Personally, I have found the benefits of using a hiking trailer to be very real.
I invented the Trekker’s Friend because I’ve always found it uncomfortable to carry a heavy pack for long periods. It turns out I’m not the only one! This feeling is quite common, as I discovered in the market research discussed here.
During the course of developing the Trekker’s Friend I also performed my own research that indicated the extent that carrying a heavy backpack slows you down and requires extra energy. This aligns with the findings of research done by the American military and reported here.
There have been big improvements in creating lighter gear to deal with these problems, but they can only somewhat solve the problem. The Trekker’s Friend is the next step in that process, removing almost all the weight from the body when the terrain allows.
